A herd of Sumatran elephants roams freely near the water’s edge, not far from human settlements. Living side by side reflects the fragile balance between people and wildlife in Bukit Tigapuluh. To maintain harmony, the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) works with local communities to mitigate conflict and ensure that elephants and humans can safely share the same landscape. 

Every year, we commemorate World Habitat Day as an important moment to highlight the right of human and wildlife to decent living and a sustainable environment. This occasion also serves as a reminder that the Earth is our shared home that must be protected. The creation of decent human settlements cannot be separated from the support of healthy and sustainable ecosystems. 

The Wildlife Protection Unit of FZS Indonesia, works in the field to ensure that elephants remain on their natural home range, helping to prevent potential conflicts with humans. The World Habitat Day was more than a celebration—it was a call to action. Thriving human existence depends on sustainable habitats that also safeguard wildlife like the Sumatran Elephant. By protecting ecosystems and reducing our footprint, we can ensure a future, where people and wildlife live side by side in harmony.
