Kupang, NTT, enjoys some of the highest solar irradiance in Indonesia, with levels peaking at nearly 100% during September and October each year. This abundant resource highlights the province’s vast potential for solar energy utilization. Building on this opportunity, GIZ has been actively supporting solar energy initiatives in the region, including the commissioning of a Solar Ice Maker facility in Sulamu Village. Since May 2022, the facility has been fully powered by renewable energy, producing around one ton of ice blocks each day to support the livelihoods of local small-scale fishers. 

 To further strengthen this effort, GIZ returned to Kupang on 17–18 September 2025 to deliver training on solar PV waste management. The training equipped the facility’s owners and operators with practical knowledge on how to manage and plan for waste from solar systems, ensuring sustainability in the years ahead. As a key outcome, participants collaboratively developed a waste management plan tailored to the facility’s future needs. To amplify impact, GIZ also partnered with BLK Kupang and engaged 10 instructors, helping expand expertise on solar PV waste handling beyond the village and into broader vocational training efforts.
