Home to the endangered olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), the beach hosts a locally driven effort to protect nesting sites and rehabilitate turtles affected by human activity. This commitment to conservation is spearheaded by the residents of Jogosimo Village.

Known for its strong environmental dedication, the village established the Nature Conservation Group (KPA) Jogosimo in 2020, an initiative that grew from the local tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis). Their work effectively turns passion into action through regular patrols and educational outreach.

Driven by a scientific and community-based approach, the conservation efforts at Kaliratu Beach go beyond species protection. They also generate economic benefits through conservation-based ecotourism, creating a sustainable model that supports both nature and the local community.

One of their most impactful programs is Ronda Penyu (Turtle Patrol), where visitors join night walks to witness turtles laying eggs—an intimate, awe-inspiring experience under starlit skies.

“In 2024, we successfully conducted 10 ‘Ronda Penyu’,” shares Edi, a dedicated member of KPA Jogosimo. He emphasizes that “the tours are small and meticulously timed to respect the turtles’ natural rhythms and protect the delicate coastal ecosystem.”

This hands-on engagement also provides an invaluable learning experience about the importance of protecting these endangered creatures.

These crucial grassroots efforts receive significant backing. Kaliratu Beach is a target area of the SOLUSI project. Implemented by a consortium including Yayasan KEHATI and Yayasan TERANGI, the SOLUSI project provides vital support for turtle conservation and coastal ecosystem protection in Jogosimo, bolstering the community’s endeavors.
