The International Climate Initiative (IKI) has prioritized sustainable urban development since 2015, integrating it into its strategy in 2023. IKI supports cities in developing climate-friendly, resilient strategies through knowledge transfer, policy advice, and pilot investments. Urban climate action focuses on local climate plans, integrated policies, and financing, as seen in Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil’s Urban Labs. Adaptation efforts enhance urban resilience using nature-based solutions, such as in Thailand. Urban biodiversity projects integrate ecosystem services, exemplified by Costa Rica’s biological corridors, which restore water supply, regulate microclimates, and improve urban well-being while preserving biodiversity. 

In 2025, IKI marks 10 years of sustainable urban development as a key funding priority. Since 2015, over 100 IKI projects have been implemented in more than 50 countries, advancing climate-friendly and resilient urban growth worldwide. Find out more here.
