A Guide to Biodiversity Week 2026
International Biodiversity Day 2026 is just around the corner! This is the right time to reflect on our love for nature and how we steward biodiversity, whether through small actions in our neighbourhood, discussions within communities, or collective initiatives across levels.
The Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia, and the International Climate Initiative (IKI-Hub Indonesia), supported by GIZ Indonesia & ASEAN also recognize this as a crucial moment. Therefore, they are hosting a series of events under the banner of Biodiversity Week 2026.
This series of events is designed to do something more than convene. It is meant to develop a genuinely cross-sectoral platform, including the private sector, where knowledge is not merely exchanged but grounded in context and challenge, while strengthening collaboration and encouraging tangible action in caring for biodiversity through a diversity of approaches.

Biodiversity Week 2026 at a Glance
The urgency underpinning this event is undeniable. Today, Indonesia, as one of the world’s mega biodiverse countries, faces mounting ecological pressures: more than 60% of endemic mammals are threatened with extinction, around 31% of endemic plant species are at high risk, and nearly half of peatland ecosystems have been degraded. Invasive species, unsustainable land use, and climate change continue to erode ecological resilience.
This condition is not only observed but has also been formally documented and consolidated through the collaboration between the Government of Indonesia and its development partners, including IKI and GIZ. In August 2025, a cross-ministerial consortium launched three documents of Status Kekinian Keanekaragaman Hayati Indonesia, providing a comprehensive assessment of biodiversity conditions in key ecoregions such as Sumatra and Sulawesi. These publications expected to establish a shared evidentiary ground from which policy, planning, and intervention can be aligned.
Anchored within the Indonesian Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (IBSAP) 2025–2045, which was launched earlier in August 2024, and its supporting documents, Biodiversity Week 2026 departs from an already established body of evidence, conditions, and prior documentation. In this sense, the event is conceived as accompanying and strengthening ongoing multi-sectoral efforts to advance a shift toward biodiversity governance that is increasingly data-driven, coordinated, and outcome-oriented.
At the same time, it underscores a critical juncture where the biodiversity loss can no longer be understood as a fragmented environmental concern but must be confronted as a systemic challenge intersecting with economic development, social resilience, and intergenerational equity.
What’s New?
This year, the approach has grown more ambitious in scope. The series is not conceived as a forum for discussion alone, however, it is something more tactical: bringing together field needs and policy decisions in one chamber. In addition, technical workshops are expanded, dialogue is deepened, actor and sector are diversified, and private sector engagement is strengthened from the start, not just complementary.
The focus also becomes more concrete, emphasizing multi-sector collaboration, strengthened policy implementation, empowered field-level actors, and measurable impact. Each activity is also geared towards producing concrete follow-ups, whether in the form of partnerships, action plans, or shared commitments between many stakeholders.
On the other side, regional participation has been given considerably more chances. Three ecoregions — Papua, Sulawesi-Maluku, and Kalimantan — are now positioned as key actor and to elevate their vision, initiatives, challenges, and needs to the national level.
When does Biodiversity Week 2026 begin?
Biodiversity Week 2026 will take place in third week of May (please sign up here to receive more updates of the event), 2026, in Jakarta. Beyond that, several supporting events will be held both before and after the main week across three ecoregions.
Where will Biodiversity Week take place?
This event will unfold in Jakarta, a city whose gravitational pull as the seat of government renders it less a backdrop than a deliberate point of convergence.
As a strategic locus for convening cross-sector stakeholders, Jakarta’s institutional gravity will make encounters not only possible but purposeful. From this city, ideas, insights, and emerging initiatives are expected to extend beyond the capital, carried outward into the diverse regions of Indonesia.
Furthermore, Biodiversity week will also extend into Sorong, Makassar, and Balikpapan, where a series of supporting events will take place.
What’s Inside Biodiversity Week?
The series of events is designed with a variety of approaches. From technical workshops to cross-sector dialogues to strengthen biodiversity management.
The objective is to improve the performance of biodiversity management across all stakeholders, targeting provincial and municipal governments, academics, business actors, communities, NGOs, and universities, while also engaging ministries, academics, business actors, and development partners.
A business forum also emerges as one of the week’s more compelling fixtures, bringing together government actors, the private sector, and key stakeholders to identify challenges, articulate needs, and trace the opportunities that shape the evolving role of business in biodiversity conservation across Indonesia. The trajectory of this forum is to catalyse sustainable private investment in Indonesia’s biodiversity economy and develop actionable pathways for nature-positive business models aligned with Indonesian Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan (IBSAP) targets.
Activities such as fun walks will also be organized to encourage broader participation and foster collective public awareness of biodiversity’s importance, while serving as an opportunity to explain and promote the efforts undertaken by the Government of Indonesia and its development partners in managing biodiversity.
More than 1,000 invitees from various sectors are scheduled to attend to enliven this series of events, bringing a spirit of collaboration in efforts to preserve biodiversity.
Through this combination, Biodiversity Week 2026 thus is not only a platform, but also a space for meeting, learning, and moving together.
