National Environmental Day 2026 will have a very special meaning for the Frankfurt Zoological Society’s reintroduction team in our Ecosystem Restoration Concession in Bukit Tigapuluh.  In November 2025, our trackers came upon a female orangutan named Rambo carrying a newborn, scarcely a month old. It was the twenty-fifth orangutan birth recorded within our concession.

“We are all very happy about this birth, as it shows that the orangutans, we have released into the wild are on their way to becoming a self-sustaining population,” said Dr. Andhani Widya, a veterinarian, reflecting on the event. Such births, she added, are what send the team back into the forest each morning before sunrise, to resume the patient work of monitoring and protecting the orangutans of Bukit Tigapuluh.

Since 2003, we have already released 205 orangutans into the wild in Bukit Tigapuluh. The 25 confirmed births show that our highly intensive care is an extremely effective measure to reestablish a viable orangutan population.
