The new IKI-funded GeoClimRisk Project held its kick-off workshop and related activities in Indonesia in September 2024 

GeoClimRisk is a new project funded by the German Federal Foreign Office under the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and looks at geopolitical and geoeconomic dimensions of climate change. The intersection of climate change and policy significantly impacts global economic growth, financial flows, trade, international relations, security priorities, and geopolitical dynamics. While emissions reductions and advancing technologies offer hope, they carry risks and must be paired with adaptation strategies to address unavoidable climate impacts and manage loss and damage. These challenges underscore the need for equitable cost/benefit sharing, as articulated in the “just transition” framework, which supports fairness in transitioning to a green economy. GeoClimRisk advances scientific knowledge in these areas as a platform for enhanced policy discussion concerning climate action in national contexts. The project partners with stakeholders in Indonesia, India, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria and is implemented in partnership between Germany’s Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). 

Indonesia was the first of the partner countries to kick off project activities on the ground with a scoping workshop in September 2024. The workshop saw stakeholders from line ministries, academia, and civil society organizations gather and map out pathways for a successful implementation of GeoClimRisk in Indonesia.
