Kick-off Meeting: Advancing Indonesia’s Ecoregion Biodiversity Status for Maluku and Java 

Indonesia continues to strengthen its commitment to biodiversity conservation with the ongoing development of the Ecoregion Biodiversity Status—a key document supporting the implementation of the Indonesian Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (IBSAP) 2025-2045. 

Currently, the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), with support from GIZ Indonesia & ASEAN, are finalizing updates for Sumatra and Sulawesi, while Konservasi Indonesia leads efforts in Papua. Building on this momentum, GIZ—through the Climate & Biodiversity Hub Indonesia and the SOLUSI project—is now supporting the development of biodiversity status assessments for Bali-Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Java. 

On March 3, 2025, the journey for Maluku and Java officially began with a virtual kick-off meeting. The Director of Environment at Bappenas emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, encouraging contributions from local governments, NGOs, and academia to ensure a comprehensive assessment of both terrestrial and marine biodiversity in these regions. 

Hosted by Bappenas, the event gathered key stakeholders, including BRIN, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, to discuss the rich biodiversity of the Maluku and Java ecoregions. These discussions are crucial for establishing a strong baseline of biodiversity data, which will enhance Indonesia’s ability to manage its natural resources effectively. 

With these collaborative efforts, Indonesia is taking a significant step toward a more informed, strategic, and sustainable approach to biodiversity conservation.
